You know that feeling? When you finish a book and the ending still has you feeling a certain kind of way months after the fact?
Well. That’s how I feel about Misrule.
I read its predecessor, Malice last year, and fell immediately, irrevocably in love with Heather Walter’s world. I loved the idea of a Maleficent-esque character falling head-over-heels in love with a Princess Aurora. And seeing it in execution? Chef’s kiss.
I’ll do my best to not spoil the events of either book (as I really do think you need to go read them if you haven’t yet), but there is one major spoiler I cannot get around.
Aurora is an enchanted slumber. And it’s all Alyce’s fault.
Alyce turned Aurora’s kingdom to ash, punishing it for everything she had endured. All the while Aurora slept, and Alyce had to wonder if her beloved Princess would still love her just the same when she woke up. If she woke up. Misrule takes us on a heart-rending journey where we’re forced to ask ourselves if love is truly strong enough to overcome everything?
I try to write detailed reviews of the books I read. I love diving into the little things that differentiate a good story from a great one. I love dissecting storylines and searching for things that can make the story even better. And yet, as I write this review, all I can think to say is: I f***ing loved it.
Because I did. And more than just because it made my gay little heart incredibly happy. It was just stunning. It made me feel my feelings. It made me feel hope, joy, sorrow, despair. It made me doubt, it made me grieve.
If you love retellings (especially of the sapphic variety), you would be silly to pass up the opportunity to read theMalice Duology.
Do yourself a favor and pick it up. Thank me in the morning when you’ve finished binging these beauties!
