’Tis the season to get spooky! I’m back again with another recent read, Hollow Heathens!
Hollow Heathens: Book of Blackwell, the first of the Tales of Weeping Hollow series, is an immersive paranormal romance set in Weeping Hollow, Maine. Fallon Grimaldi grew up away from her ancestral town, completely oblivious to its superstitions and traditions. When she receives a letter from her last surviving relative summoning her, she packs up her life and moves to a place she’d only heard stories about. Fallon meets Julian—a masked stranger who insists he’s cursed. She’s drawn to him, bonded by their otherness. And perhaps something more. Anything is possible in Weeping Hollow, where magic might very well be real.
I expected a lot of things when I picked up this book. I expected something atmospheric and creepy. I expected a dark romance that would make me ache. Hollow Heathens delivered in all aspects.
I have never read Nicole Fiorina before, but I can safely say I will be picking up more of their work. I will definitely be picking up the second installment of the Blackwell Series when it becomes available. She wrote beautifully, creating an immersive world with interesting lore and even more interesting characters. Their romance borders on “slow-burn,” which, as we all know, is my literal kryptonite.
I like the care that was paid to developing Julian. Too often, the monster trope is allowed to be two-dimensional. I was pleased to see that he had substance and complexity beyond being the “sexy man of intrigue” for our story. And Fallon? I loved her. There was something about her that just felt authentic. Real.
Hollow Heathens was an easy five-star for me! If you love paranormal romance, spooky small-town vibes, and slow burns, this should go to the top of your TBR!
Have you read Hollow Heathens before? What did you think? If not, how do you feel about slow burn romances? I’d love to know your thoughts!
