I’m not going to lie; when I saw the title The Bodyguard, I immediately assumed that this love story was going to be about a man fending enemies off his would-be lover. I was surprised (and relieved) to see that the traditional gender roles were swapped. Our heroine is the bodyguard, and her celebrity lover-to-be is the one desperately in need of protection.
Katherine Center invites us into Hannah Brooks’ world, engrossing us immediately in a tale as old as time—a workaholic who recently lost her mother and was almost immediately dumped by her boyfriend. Desperate to reclaim some semblance of control over her life, Hannah leaps at the first job opportunity that comes her way. Which is what puts her in Jack Stapleton’s life. He’s a big-screen heart-throb who has returned to Texas to spend time with his ailing mother. While he needs a bodyguard to keep him safe from a stalker, he doesn’t want to worry his family. So, he comes up with a wildly brilliant idea (emphasis on wild) to pretend that Hannah is his girlfriend. Surely, nothing could go wrong with this plan.
I want to first start off by saying that Center’s writing is absolutely beautiful. There was something so incredibly nostalgic about reading this book. I have never read anything by Center, but her words have a way of making the reader feel at home. It’s the quintessential rom-com that brings you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions.
I was hooked from the first page. It was the leisure read that I desperately needed to turn my brain off. It’s a feel-good romance I feel like most people would love to have on their shelves.
What I appreciated more than anything was the added mystery surrounding Stapleton’s stalker. Sure, the romance was sweet, steamy, and everything you could have asked for, but the element of mystery was really what kept me invested. Well, that and I sincerely loved Hannah. As a smaller woman with a face like a Victorian doll, I often get underestimated, too. I couldn’t help but root for her. Especially when it came to her ex, who I couldn’t help but vividly fantasize about punching in the throat.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a sweet romantic comedy with a bit of a thriller-esque twist!
