Review: “Vice’d” by Layne Daniels

My Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Vice’d” is the first in the Vices and Vows series (free on Kindle Unlimited) written by Layne Daniels. It’s a (smutty) BDSM romance, rife with many beloved tropes including love/lust at first sight, a strong heroine and an Alpha Male love interest with more money than he knows what to do with.

The story follows Vice, a tattoo artist and owner of her own tattoo shop and Miller, a businessman/app developer. Vice’s first impression of Miller is unsavory, to say the least. He storms in, making all manner of accusations — but once realization of how wrong he is occurs to him, he’s struck dumb by Vice’s beauty. Her charm. Her compassion. It inspires a perfervid desire to make her his. And not in a creepy way. Miller is the opposite of toxic masculinity and I am here for it.

I will start my review with a bit of a disclaimer: I don’t tend to enjoy first-person any-tense writing so I tend to not pick up books that are written in this way. Secondly, I’m indifferent to smut, most of the time I end up skipping past it (which some might argue, “what is the point”). All that being said, however, I’m going to be critiquing objectively without my personal bias.

With all that in mind, “Vice’d”, for me, gets five stars.

Each character had their own distinct voice. Casual, playful, sassy. I found myself utterly enamored with Vice — I loved her smart mouth, and her ‘boss bitch’ attitude. What I liked even more was the moral of the story that: yes, someone can be a sub in the bedroom and still be a boss-ass-bitch.

I’m usually not the biggest fan of Alpha male characters, but Miller was written in a way I found oddly endearing. It was, if anything, a healthier look on a Dom/Sub relationship, which, for reasons I won’t get into, I feel like needs to be explored a great deal more.

My grievances with the book primarily with my personal preferences. I don’t have anything to criticize structurally, or content-wise. It’s a book I can easily see myself recommending to my friends. I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of this series!
