The Bone Witch by Ivy Asher, and the first installment of “The Osseous Chronicles”, has been sitting on my TBR list for quite some time, and I deliberately held off until Spooktober to crack into this book. Let me tell you, friendship, it was hard. The temptation was real!
As soon as I was able to, I tore into this book. I consumed every word. And then as soon as I finished it, I immediately got the second book. If that’s not foreshadowing an amazing review, I don’t… well, then I don’t know how to write reviews.
Anyway, let’s get into the obligatory plot synopsis.
We’re plummeted into a rich world of unique lore and ancestral magic as Lennox Osseus finds herself in possession of her grandmother’s bones. No, not her skeleton – but her bag of bones. See, she is an osteomancer. Or rather, was. Once she passed on, the bones themselves chose the next in line.
Lennox is woefully unprepared for what life has thrown her way. Grudgingly, she accepts her new fate and immediately finds herself entangled in a mystery that went far deeper than she could have previously imagined. A mystery that coils itself around Rogan Kendrick – her greatest threat.
The first thing I noticed about this book was the voice. It was tongue and cheek – relatable. I felt like I was reading from the perspective of some of my closest friends. I found myself wanting to be friends with Lennox. I felt deeply for her. I felt confused alongside her, overwhelmed. I felt loathing, and longing all in equal measure.
I have nothing negative to say about this book. I strongly encourage everyone who is interested in paranormal romance with unique lore to check this out. I will warn you that Ivy leaves you on one wicked cliffhanger. I guess, we’ll have to stay tuned for my review of the second book!
