Let me first start by saying that Karen Jasper has certainly earned a reader for life. The Light Stays On is a love story that will haunt me for the rest of my days.
The Light Stays On is about a terminally ill wife and mother to two. Alex Fournier makes the agonizing decision to pursue her heart’s deepest desire and reconnect with Lily Peterson — the woman she fell deeply, irrevocably in love with years ago.
I hesitate to say too much about the overarching plot for fear of revealing too much. I will say that this was a shattering story that made me feel every feeling you could imagine. Heartbreak, love, pure blind hope, and even at times, anger. Incredibly powerful, given that this is a short read.
The writing was absolutely stunning, though, I can very easily see how it might be difficult for people to follow. The chapters are quite short, and our story is shown through flashbacks and multiple perspectives (for the most part, you are reading through Lily’s and Alex’s perspectives, though a few others crop up along the way).
It balanced its somberness with brief glimpses of joy. It was impossible to not fall head over heels in love with both of these characters. I had the sneaking suspicion that it was going to end in pain — I’m normally quite good at guessing what would happen next, but I was shocked. Absolutely, totally, utterly shocked.
It took me a good week or so to finally sit down and write this review. Even writing about it now, I’m getting a bit misty-eyed.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a deep, emotion-provoking women’s fiction. Karen Jasper deserves so much more recognition for her work than what she’s currently earned. A hidden gem, to be sure!
What was the last book that made you turn into an emotional wreck?
