Review: Lord of Embers by C.N. Crawford

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Friends! Here I am, back again with the C.N. Crawford’s, The Demon Queen Trials second installment, Lord of Embers. If you read my review of City of Thorns, you’ll know that I was instantly hooked on this new adult paranormal-romantasy. Please be advised that there are spoilers in my review, so proceed at your own risk!

Given how madly I fell in love with the lore and the characters, I went into the second book with high expectations. Expectations that were, for the most part, met!

Our story centers around our favorite neurotic doomsday prepper, Rowan, and her journey for (as the series name implies) the crown. It seems that Orion (The Lord of Chaos) still can’t shake the hold that Morgana (Rowan’s doppelgänger) has on him. She looks too much like his old nemesis to truly trust her. Torn between agonizing attraction and gut-churning distrust, the pair seems to be forever at odds with one another. It’s Orion’s pursuit of the throne that puts them, once again, in each other’s crosshairs. It’s a tale of deception, mistrust, and standing in one’s own way.

My earlier praise of Crawford’s writing and world-building still stands. I adored everything: the flow, the voice, the pacing. And the world. If I weren’t such a baby, I could definitely imagine moving to the City of Thorns (but c’mon, geese and Mickey Mouse scare the ever-living tar out of me. There’s no way I could survive in a city of demons!).

I thoroughly enjoyed this read. I devoured it cover to cover. Which, by my own rubric, would ensure a five-star rating. However, this book felt like a stepping stone in the story instead of its own well-rounded installment. It’s hard to put to words how it was so close to hitting the right spot but fell just a hair short.

I am greatly looking forward to the final installment of this series, Garden of Serpents. Crawford did an amazing job of creating an immersive world that sucked me right in! I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a good, original-world paranormal romance!
