Friends! I am overjoyed to share this ARC review of Up in Flames by Juniper King. It’s the second book in the Scarlet Tempest series. If you’ve been around for a while, you’ll likely remember my review of the self-titled first book, Scarlet Tempest! If you haven’t, don’t worry; here’s the tl;dr: I loved it. And I also loved the prequel!
We follow Selynna back to her hometown of Woodburne after having been away for months. Joined by her companions, Ayre (a philandering satyr) and Aksel (a deydre, the man who has stolen her heart), she dares to think that her life can begin again. With no obvious threats, she finally lets down her guard. But when people start behaving strangely toward her, and her traveling companions go missing, she is forced to return to her life as an adventurer. With the help of March—a daemon on a mission—they set off on a quest to find the friends who left her behind. She finds herself engulfed in daemon politics and a rising evil that threatens all of humanity. The answer, she’s sure, will come when she finds Aksel and Ayre again.
When I first picked up this series, I was taken by Juniper King’s writing style. I cannot sing her praise highly enough! From the moment I cracked open this book, I was hooked. It also didn’t hurt that I have been not-so-patiently waiting for the sequel since I finished its predecessor. In short, King knows how to skillfully weave together stories that are not only unique but gripping. Despite starting to read this book in the midst of a slump, I couldn’t put it down!
I don’t want to delve too much into the inner workings of the story (I do my best to write reviews that don’t contain spoilers), but I have to say that I was thrust into the upside-down with this one. I had believed I knew where the story was going, but instead, I was served a curveball. Just as a warning, this book does end on a cliffhanger. After you finish it, you can join me in breathing heavily and waiting for the next book.
If you love paranormal/fantasy stories featuring a bad boy, slow-burn romance, then this should be on your TBR shelf! Juniper King is a hidden gem of an author I am so happy to have discovered. You should give her a chance: check out Scarlet Tempest and Up In Flames.
