Back in February, I started compiling a list of books I wanted to get to. At the top of the list was Erica Lee. I was instantly drawn to Anyone But Her. It is a story about a fake relationship that results in feelings for the best friend’s sister. It might be a bit of schadenfreude on my end, but I do enjoy a good ol’ struggle to the finish line.
Reagan Cooper — an out and proud lesbian — finds herself in a precarious position when she joins her best friend and roommate, Jamie, for a family reunion. Unbeknownst to her, he has been lying to his incredibly religious parents for a very long time about their relationship. They seem to be under the false impression that she is his girlfriend. Unwilling to throw her best friend to the wolves, she agrees. In no world did she imagine that she would find herself falling head over heels for her best friend’s sister, Charlie.
Now, as my group’s designated event fake-girlfriend, I had high expectations for this book. And I am pleased to report that Erica Lee did not disappoint. I was enamored with Reagan at the onset — from the first mention of her “Chicken Nuggets Made Me Gay” t-shirt, I was hers. I loved her friendship with Jamie. Further, I loved the light it shed on how crippling “otherness” can be. It’s a very real look at how expectations can shape and morph us into being someone other than who we want to be. Reagan has all the qualities of the “gay mom” friend we all need.
I also loved Charlie. I loved seeing the too-real story of feeling inadequate or minimized by her gender.
It encapsulated the gay experience in a relatable, but not in a garishly sad way.
I would recommend Anyone But Her to anyone looking for a rollercoaster, who loves a quick, quirky, and cute lesfic. Erica Lee did a stunning job with this book, and I can’t wait to read more from this author!
